Dr. Jim McGill

Associate Professor of Chemistry

Jim McGill joined the Department of Chemistry in 2001.  He routinely teaches Basic Principles of Chemistry (CH181) face-to-face and online, Forensic Chemistry (CH420/CH620), Graduate Seminar (CH608/609), and Qualitative Analysis (CH187).  He has also taught Environmental Chemistry (CH350/EV350), Topics in Analytical Chemistry--Chromatography (CH675), and General Chemistry I (CH185).  During the 2009 summer semester, Jim is teaching Basic Principles of Chemistry Online.

His research interests lie mainly in forensic chemistry, with current projects dealing with the chemical composition, degradation, and visualization of latent fingermarks; qualitative and quantitative analysis of controlled substances; analysis, classification of defensive spray residues; analysis of clandestine methamphetamine laboratory evidence for production capacity determination; and persistence of fentanyl concentrations in post-mortem liver tissues.  Jim is also interested in the philosophy and pedagogy of forensic science and in using forensic science as an outreach tool for stimulating student interest in learning about science.
