a. BI200 – General Microbiology

Fall 2000 - Lecture

* Dr. Champine could always tell when we were lost and always had something to make us laugh.  The best part of the class was coming to class but the worst part of class was coming to class.

* I think that the best thing that you did was your “approachability.”  You were always available to answer any questions and you were thorough in your answers.

* The class went a good pace, but the broad subject matter is a little much.  Good job teaching – needs to be commended.  I learned a lot from this class.  Two thumbs up!

* I enjoyed the lecture and lab thoroughly.  Keep the in-class assignments – they help!

* I liked this course.  Both lab and lecture were neat.  I loved Jill as our T.A.  Tests were a little complicated, but probably more my fault than the professor’s!!

* Dr. Champine was a great instructor who was always available if you had questions and to help students.  But sometimes he was “too easy” in accepting late work.  I don’t know if the late work was penalized but if not, this did not encourage students to meet deadlines.

* Dr. Champine has the tendency to jump back and forth between boards, and taking notes becomes confusing.  But his light-humored jokes and interest for students makes up for that by far.  His tests were killers, but he’s a good instructor – best of both worlds, eh?

* I have really enjoyed Dr. Champine.  He showed a great deal of interest in the class and helped every time we needed it.  Some of the other teachers here should be so kind!

* Class was good but exams hit hard.  Possibly more leading into exams would help.

* Dr. Champine is a sensitive, respectful, and extremely polite professor and I found coming to his class a very pleasant learning experience.

* The main idea of lecture was often difficult to discern.  I didn’t always know what you deemed most important.  It was obvious hat you cared about helping us learn.

* Good class, I learned a lot.  Liked the idea of in-class assignments.

* I have enjoyed this class although it was more challenging than I expected.  I liked that the class was more than just memorizing different microorganisms.

* Lecture notes could have been outlined better as far as the ABC’s go.  Sometimes went on to a new subject without me knowing if it was part of the last notes.

* The course was fair.

* Sometimes lecture was kind of confusing but I was very pleased with the flexibility Dr. Champine had with the material and grading.  Dr. Champine is very knowledgeable and I felt good about his teaching.  Jill was wonderful, very intelligent and eager to help.  She was very easygoing and flexible.  Great job!  Don’t change a thing!

* Tests cover more material than is feasible for students to effectively study.

* The course was well as the instructor I would rate as excellent.  Most of the classes I have taken require a writing project such as an essay.  However odd it may seem, I think an essay, relatively short of course, on for instance a microbe that is used in industry.  These types of assignments are usually quite rewarding.

* I love “administrative breaks”!

* Enjoyed the class very much.  You have been one of the most thoughtful and considerate teachers I have had.  You are very tuned in to the class (whether we are zoning out or paying attention).  Very interesting to observe this teaching style.  Thanks!

* Dr. Champine is a very caring, intellectual man who knows well his discipline.  He has helped me on several occasions.  His “helpers” were encouraging as well as knowledgeable about microbiology.  They have answered many of my questions and were courteous and caring.

* Very energetic and tells jokes about stuff in class.  Understanding and helpful to students who are having trouble.  Easy to talk to and will readily listen.

* I enjoyed the class and the unknown at the end of the semester (that was fun).  I think you let students get away with things too easily.  You should be a little stricter on timeframes for homework.

Fall 2000 - Lab Section 01

* I liked how this lab was set up.  We were able to cover a lot of material but it was all very thorough.  I enjoyed taking this class and learned a lot.  Dr. Champine and Jill always went out of their way to help me and answer my questions, especially when I came in outside of class hours.

* Maija Bluma was very confusing on unknown and made me redo several tests unnecessarily.  Jill was a good assistant – very helpful with questions.  Have a little trouble following lectures.  The information doesn’t seem to all tie together – kind of scattered about.  Maybe in lab tell more about the outcomes of the tests and less how to do them.  Most are very similar to do but int. are all run together.

* The classroom was too cold.

* Dr. Champine is an excellent teacher.  He deserves a company car, better benefits, and a month’s paid vacation.  There need to be more teachers like him!

* Dr. Champine is an excellent teacher – he keeps our attention and makes learning fun.  The labs are interesting and applicable to the course and life.  Jill is great!

Spring 2001 -  Lecture

* The organization for this class could be a lot better if all handouts were given at the beginning of the semester, for lab and lecture.

* I thought Dr. Champine was a great teacher.  I thought the administrative breaks and in-class assignments were good ideas.  I learned a lot in this class.

* Dr. Champine is an awesome teacher.  I’m learning a lot and finding the material interesting.

Spring 2001 - Lab Section 01

* Did not allow enough time to finish labs

* Instructor used class time wisely and efficiently in order to maximize student learning.  There are only two hours in class with not time to work over.  Please don’t give us two minutes to do everything – maybe cut back some – give us time to act on your presentations.

* Dr. Champine did a fantastic job at teaching BI200.  He is by far the best professor I have had in the four years I have attended SEMO.  Two thumbs up!  Keep up the good work.

Spring 2001 - Lab Section 02 (Primarily comments about TA)

* Start lecture on time, lecture faster.  There is no reason we should run out of time each week.

* Give all handouts at the beginning of the semester.

* Jill was an excellent lab instructor.  She always came to class perky and excited about the material.  She made the material interesting.

* I think Jill was a great lab instructor, she made it easier to understand the things we did in lab.  I would recommend her to my friends who want to take the class.  She loves her job and makes the class a whole lot more interesting.

* You’re doing a great job!  I like having the lectures during lab time because it helps to understand the lab results.

* Jill shows that she is excited about micro when she talks about her favorite flesh-eating, disease-causing, and generally repugnant microbes.

* Jill is a very good lab teacher.  I appreciate the extra examples and explanations that she gives in addition to simply going over the lab.  I really, really enjoy this lab…more than all of the other lab classes I’ve taken here at Southeast.  I’ve even considered changing my major from geoscience to biology because of this lab.  Thank you for an intellectually stimulating lab experience.  Enjoy your summer.

Spring 2001 - Lab Section 03

* Great teacher.  Calm and laid back.  Doesn’t act like he’s superior to the rest of the world like many professors do.

* I don’t like getting lab papers in lecture and lecture papers in lab.  I have two binders and I always forget to put the right papers in the right binder.

* The demonstrations of how labs work are great.

* The information concerning labs was very clearly presented.

Spring 2001 IDEA Comments

* I really liked this class.  The lab assistants were all great:  friendly, informative, helpful.  Some of the lecture matter needs to be organized better because it was hard to understand his connection/link from one subject topic to another.

* Dr. Champine is always there to help.  This is great for the larger size class when he takes time to talk to students one on one.  Jill Basham was an awesome lab instructor.  She explained things precisely and helped anyone who needed it.

* Generally a good course, quick-moving.  Covers a lot of material very quickly.  Learned quite a bit of useful information.

* I think that it would be an advantage to receive all handouts at the beginning of the semester.  It was really disorganized for me with handout after handout.

* I like biology and you really gave me reason to like it.  Jill and Nanda were great to work with, always there to help.  Will look forward to having another class with you.

* The only major problem I had with this course were the tests.  I felt like the final two tests were packed together, and it was too much information to memorize, not just understand.  Also, it seemed like the lab portion of the course was unorganized toward the end, as far as the manuscripts and the unknown experiment.  I didn’t know what was expected of me.

* Dr. Champine was willing to put up with my constant battery of questions that ranged from bizarre to just plain stupid.  He’s a very kind person.  My only complaint is that point values did not seem to relate well to the amount of work done.  Overall, an excellent course with excellent instructors.

* Dr. Champine was a big help to me outside of class.  He explained things so that I could better understand them.  Jill was an excellent lab instructor.  She explained things in a practical way so that it was easier to understand its importance.  Nanda helped me a lot when it came to understanding how to perform certain tests.  Maija helped me interpret results of tests when others were not available.

* This course was very informative and educational.  The lab was great.  The only thing that needs to change is covering less material on a test.

* I really loved this class.  Time restraints are sometimes a problem, but I enjoyed it none-the-less.  Jill was excelledn-good at explaining and demonstrating.  Nanda was very helpful.  Dr. Champine was caring and knowledgeable and the best instructor for this course.

* Lab exercises were very helpful conceptually.  It would be more useful if lab were two days a week, not one.

* Would like more frequent tests.  Jill was very nice and helpful.

* Fair teacher – calm, laid back, and willing to help students learn.  Enjoyed the class.

* I loved this class!  Dr. Champine was an excellent teacher.  I thought the review sessions were very helpful.  I didn’t like the lab journal.  I would rather have had to turn in questions weekly because it’s too easy to get behind in the journal.  I would definitely take Dr. Champine again if the opportunity arises.

* The examples and presentations given by you in lab were very helpful in understanding the tests that we did.  You were very helpful in explaining the unknown assignment when I came to you.

* I would suggest having more tests so the information that has to be reviewed isn’t such a large amount.

* The class was very organized and educational but the exams were very difficult compared to the rest of the class.

* Small number of tests, the amount of material on tests were very large and it was hard to know it all.

* This was a great class.  I wish and should have put more effort into the class.

* I think Dr. Champine is an excellent instructor.  The material covered in this class is difficult and requires students to work hard.  Dr. Champine has a great balance with this class.  He makes it hard enough to be challenging and not too easy.  He is very friendly with his students and does not make them feel stupid for asking about things they do not understand.  Dr. Champine receives five gold stars from me!

* Dr. Champine is an excellent teacher.  You can really tell he enjoys what he does.

* The instructor seemed very interested in the students’ learning.  A lot of times I felt rushed in lab class.  I felt like we were asked to do much more work than we had time for.

* I don’t like how the workload in this class piled up towards the end of the year.  It should either be better distributed throughout the course or lightened.  However, I learned more in this course than most others I’ve taken.

* I thought this course was taught in a matter that maximized learning.  I had a really good time and enjoyed the instructor.

* I really enjoyed this class.  The lab was my favorite part!

* Jill did a fantastic job.  She was very helpful and her enthusiasm for the class mad her easy to listen to.

* I really enjoyed taking this course.  Although it was a lot of work (sometimes too much), I feel I have learned a lot about this area of study.  I really enjoyed the lab where I got a hands on experience of what conditions it took for different microbes to grow.

Fall 2001 - Lecture

* Dr. Champine had clear and understandable presentations that were informative and effective.  He kept the class involved and was very enthusiastic.  Dr. Champine was always willing to talk outside of class and was very helpful.  Dr. Champine was an excellent instructor.

* It didn’t seem to follow a very well developed patent like my other science courses, confusing.  Memorization was the only thing I really used for tests.

Fall 2001 - Lab

* I think Dr. Champine is a wonderful teacher.  He is very helpful and will work with you if you don’t understand something.  My favorite part of the lab was working with the unknown.  Maija and Amy were very helpful and nice also.

* Dr. Champine was always willing to discuss lab material outside of lab when needed.  He was very enthusiastic about helping the class learn the material.  Maija and Amy were also very helpful and enthusiastic when consulted.

* Amy and Maija are great substitutes.  The worst part of the course was gram staining.

* Although my most difficult class, it has been my favorite.  At times,  I though there was too much out of class lab time needed but when I would arrive, Amy and Maija were always willing to help.  I also would like to add that the text was very good.  I t made analyzing at home easy to understand.

Fall 2001 IDEA Written Comments

* Dr. Champine was very helpful.  As someone going into elementary education, some of the material was of greater depth than any of the chemistry courses but he was very helpful in making me not overwhelmed.

* I enjoyed the lab part of this class the most because it was interesting and it wasn’t things that you can do in everyday life.

* This is a good course.  There are a variety of ways to get points besides tests which is nice.  Dr. Champine would always answer questions and was always nice in offering extra help.  The lab followed along with lecture.  I learned a lot.  I’d recommend this professor and this course.

* Instructor related lab activities to real life situations.  The course was kept upbeat by the enthusiastic instructor who made both the lab and lecture enjoyable, though-provoking, and very beneficial.  Excellent instructor.

* Get rid of one lab manuscript and one notebook check.  I don’t think it is real good that over half of the points in lab are decided on the day of the final and the last lab.  This way you can spread things out more.

* Dr. Champine was a great instructor.  He was very helpful and easy to communicate with.  One complaint or suggestion would be not to pile on the assignments at the end of the semester.  I have other classes.

* I really liked the way he taught.  He explained everything in a way that I could understand!

* Lab was very fun and interesting.  Lecture to me was hard to stay focused.  I don’t like learning a little bit about a lot of stuff.  I would have liked it more if it were more detailed.  I guess that is for upper level though.  Lecture could have been more organized.

* I enjoyed this class.  Thanks!

* He is a good and an understanding teacher.  He really cared and showed that he remembers how it is to be a college student.

* Very good at explaining information to students not familiar with this area.  More frequent tests would have made studying more sufficient.

* Lab was too hurried.  Never had enough time to finish experiments.  Would have learned more if we did not try to squeeze so much into such a short period of time.

* The only thing I found wrong with this class is that we are too rushed in the lab.  We should have spent less time going over instructions and more time working.

* Teams/discussion groups were not relevant except for the lab.

* Dr. Champine is an excellent teacher who I have enjoyed interacting with!

* Too much out of class time for practical and unknowns.

Spring 2002 - Lecture

* Dr. Champine is an excellent instructor that cares about individual student’s progress and concerns. Since the lectures were held only 2 days a week, I got the feeling that a large amount of material was being condensed to fit the time allowed. The tests, however, required knowledge of this information in detail. An outline of the lecture material may have been helpful to understand how the information fit together.

* Suggestions: possibly breaking up the course material into smaller increments for more tests.

* To many homework assignments. To time consuming!!

Spring 2002 - Lab Section -01

* Amy was a big help in the lab part of the course. The labs had a tendency to be very dry and pointless. The practical exams should be in class, because it is hard for a lot of student to find time out of class. The lab notebooks are too much work (about an hour per entry) for a 3 credit hour class.

* Too many homework assignments. Too time consuming for a 3 credit course.

Spring 2002 - Lab Section -02

* The only flaw I noticed in this course is lab is on Thursday at 10:00-12:00. If your objectives cannot be met in this time frame, then the experiments shouldn’t be performed. The unknown project, for example must be done completely on our own time and I work 25-30 hours a week. This is on top of a full load of classes. I personally don’t have time to come in and do the experiments, and if I do, its because I slack off on something else that was important.

* Dr. Champine is a very effective teacher. He was always helpful friendly and encouraging. I enjoyed having him as a teacher.

* I liked that things actually worked liked they were supposed to most of the time and your grade didn’t depend on getting the right results. I think it would be helpful if all the inoculations weren’t saved for the last 15 min of class but done at the beginning or spread out through the whole lab period.

* The instruction given for this course was great, but there is a lot of work to be done out of class for a 3 hour class. Maybe decrease the work load.

* Dr. Champine is a great professor!

* I enjoyed having Dr. Champine as a teacher. I have never had any biology before and this seemed to be taught at a higher level but he was more than willing to help me through. Without his help this class would have been much harder and frustrating.

* I really enjoyed this lab and Dr. Champine as an instructor. I felt comfortable going to him for help. Things got tetious and or confusing at times, but he was always willing to help.

Spring 2002 IDEA Written Comments

* I thought I would hate this class and would be constantly bored. However it kept me interested and actually was my favorite class this semester.

* Really enjoyed this class. Notes were vague and jumpy at times which made piecing it together difficult. Really enjoyed lab! Overall good class, great teacher!

* I think Dr. Champine did an excellent job teaching this course. He made it easier to understand the subject matter. I really enjoyed taken this course.

* To much repetitive homework- have fewer pre-lab assignments and manuscripts.

* I think Dr. Champine is a great teacher. He does need to cut back on the amount of homework and lab work he gives. I do have other classes besides this one!

* He was a very good teacher all around. He made class time interesting and funny. The lab could use a little more structure, but other than that, give the man a raise.

* I enjoyed the class. It was hard for me because I am lacking the background some students already have. He helped me sort through everything and try for an A.

* The tests would be a far reach of what you would really like to say or ask and I would get confused on what I was asked sometimes. The homework was a bit much but not too bad, just remember this is not the only class most students take in school so they have other homework. Overall, you were funny and I have enjoyed being in it as a student.

* The instructor was organized and most of the lectures made very good sense.

Fall 2002 - Lecture

* Dr. Champine is an excellent teacher, the only thing was the did not get enough time and help in preparing for test.

* Great class.

* May want to allow more space on your handouts so students have more space to take notes (ex: powerpoint printout format). Tests did not always hit the main concepts but addressed a lot of memorization. In class assignments a great idea.

Fall 2002 – Lab

* Very effective teaching style, giving breaks throughout class of hands on time and lecture time. First practical was reasonable in expectations. Enjoyed the independent unknown activities. Pre-lab assignments are a great idea to motivate students to do outside class prep.

* There was not enough time to record results most of the time. There was too many activities in one class period.

* Too many questions on handout!

* Very interesting class, hard yet entertaining.

* Dr. Champine was a very good instructor. He genuinely cares about the students and their performance in the class.

* The only complaint that I have is that I sometimes felt rushed in lab to try to get everything done. I also wanted to thank the instructor for also being willing to help students outside of class.

* When the instructors give a test there is no review of material which help alot when I can not understand certain principles of microbiology.

Fall 2002 IDEA Comments

* The in-class assignments where very helpful in helping to apply the lecture. There were also many ways to improve a grade other than test, which was very helpful.

Spring 2003 - Lecture

* Course was enjoyable because the professor made it that. This was a class I wanted to go to. That’s how they all should be. One of the best professor’s I’ve had.

* I learned a lot from the class; however things would have been more clearer had I taken more science classes to prepare for it. I really enjoyed the packets and the in-class assignments, it helped me to learn and know how well I was understanding the material.

* Sometimes I felt the class hard to follow but was able to obtain help from others. Sometimes the lecture was a little jumpy from topic to topic. But the instructor was very knowledgeable.

* I enjoyed the class, but I would have done better if the tests did not consist of so much info.

* I really liked having Dr. Champine as a teacher. I hope to have him again. He made a really hard class very enjoyable.

* Perhaps a review session would help. I loved how you passed out the packets for every lecture. They really helped.

* The in-class assignments for this course were great. They bumped grades and provided excellent study guides.

* Enjoyed it! Learned a lot!

* You did a great job of making a subject that doesn’t appeal to most people interesting.

* Too much biochemistry.

* Good teacher!

* Dr. Champine is a great teacher. If Southeast had more teachers like him than this school would be a lot better off than what it is.

* Thank you!

Spring 2003 - Lab

* If it were not for Mia, I would have given up. She is willing to help even students that are not hers. He was always too busy unless it was during class time.

* Good teacher.

* Dr. Champine is a fantastic teacher.

* Dr. Champine is a great instructor, and I would recommend that everyone get a chance to have him as a teacher.

* Too much biochemistry, BI190 should be a prereq.

* I really enjoyed this lab.

Spring 20 03 IDEA Written Comments

* Loved your class Dr. Champine.

* Have a good summer

* I enjoyed the class very much. I would probably add another test to cut down on the amount of material on each test.

* Keep up with the jokes!!

* Dr. Champine is an excellent teacher. I learned a lot from this course.

* I think the course was well taught. I enjoyed Dr. Champine and would recommend him and the course to others. Thanks.

* Great job! Your teaching style is excellent and I learned a lot from you. I learned more there than from Gathman and Lily!

* I thought the course was pretty difficult and the lectures were rushed.

* Excellent teacher!

* I found the course extremely difficult to understand.

Fall 2003 -Lecture

* I thoroughly enjoyed this class.  It was very interesting and nothing should be changed.

* Dr. Champine is an excellent teacher.  I hope to have more classes with him in the future.  His tests were difficult, but doable.  They made you learn the material.

* I have really enjoyed h\this course, and Dr. Champine is an excellent instructor.  I look forward to taking courses with him in the future.

* I fell that Professor Champine is an excellent professor and give ample opportunity to excel in his class, both lecture and lab.  I would recommend him to anyone interested in the biology field due to his vast knowledge and willing to work with students.

* Champine was an excellent instructor that is/was extremely willing to help students with all possible questions.  His help sessions for those whom need extra help.  But lecture had too many things crammed into one day of lecture, and things went a little too fast; (still due to too many things to do on one lecture guide).  But still rate Champine as a wonderful experienced professor.  :)

* The lecture was great – couldn’t be better.  Dr. Champine is wonderful, every understanding, and helpful.  He will explain things.

* I thought the class was great and was even fun.  It was obvious that you wanted everyone to do well.  I felt completely comfortable asking for help.  Overall, I would say the class and the teacher were excellent.

* Dr. Champine was a good teacher.  However, on each test there was always a section that I had no idea where it came from.  Maybe stressing a certain section would be helpful in lecture.  I like the in class assignments and review packets.

* This was a well-scheduled class.  The instructor worked fairly well with students to allow for increased opportunities to excel in this subject.  It was a good experience.

* This class was very enjoyable and I feel that I learned a significant amount.  I would enroll in a course with the prof again.  I give this class and A+.

* Dr. Champine was a great teacher, he always helped me with my question and he made it a fun class.

* :)!

* I felt that we often jumped from thing to thing during class (especially on handouts).  This was sometimes a bit confusing.

*This was the most well runned class I have taken!  Champine is the best biology teacher at Southeast.

* The class was good and interesting.  It was difficult to decipher what were the key points for the test.  Besides that everything was good.

* I have learned more in this class than in BO200 or ZO200 combined.  I would not change anything.

* This was a great class among the top 3 that I have taken in my college career.  The material was excellent, and the instructor had a thorough knowledge base of the subject.

* The lab was fun and I like the class assignments to help bring up grades from the test.

* I thought that the class was very well taught the lectures always helped and I guess thats it.

* Dr. Champine is a great professor although I found the exams quite difficult!

* Wonderful teacher!  Always willing to help.

Fall 2003 -Lab

* I had a little trouble hearing sometimes that was my only problem.

* I had a really hard time hearing in lab and sometimes there was not enough time to look at past lab results.

* Kim needs to speak up in lab; we sat in the back of the room and we could never hear what she was explaining.

* The lab was terrible, mainly because of Kim.  She was unwilling to help or explain, and just overall a very unpleasant teacher.

* Extremely fast moving – alot of test in one day/plus results of previous to read felt like I had run a race.

* Kim had a hard time trying to explain what we were looking at and doing.  Rather than try another approach she would just give up.  She is a nice person, but not a good lab instructor.

Spring 2004 - Lecture

* Dr. Champine is a very effective Instructor.  I enjoyed his class very much.

* The in class assignments were extremely helpful and I think that they help get people to class.  Also I like the overheads.

* The packets helped a lot

* The instructor gave sample tests and questions on handouts but did not give us answers to see if we were on the right track.

* Very well taught class.  Tests were a little tough for the fact you had to do a lot of book reading to understand concepts in depth.

* Test did not seem to cover most important topics of class.  Should allow to drop one in-class assignment grade since you do not accept excuses.

* The class was very well presented, but a lot of previous biology knowledge was assumed

* This class was fairly easy.  I would have enjoyed more essay questions on test.  Web site was clear and easy to understand.

* I really enjoyed this class and feel that I learned a lot of things that will help me in future classes.  Dr. Champine is a very effective teacher.

* Dr. Champine did a wonderful job teaching the course.  The subject within itself made the course difficult and hard to understand.

* I enjoyed Dr. Champine’s teaching style and really appreciated the out of class help on Wednesday!

* Class was fun....your a good teacher

* I really enjoyed the class and the structure of the class.  Recommend to anyone Great Job!

* Great professor overall.

Spring 2004– Lab Section 1 (8AM),

* Great Lab teacher...Not so good lecture teacher.  Don’t explain in detail.  Handouts aren’t helpful if we don’t know and can’t find the answers.

* Dr. Champine was often to busy with advising to take time to help a student who wasn’t his advisee.

* I think Dr. Champine was a great instructor.  My only complaint would be in asking for assistance.  He has always helped, but is always in a rush as well.  It doesn’t bother me, but has put off other students to ask for help.

* The class was very interesting.  Teacher was very effective.  Handouts were Voluminous and organization of it by student is required.

Summer 2004 Lab and Lecture

*Dr. Champine, you had a very interesting class.  I enjoyed having you!

*Mai was very helpful this summer.  Thanks Mai.

*Due to the amount of material, this course would probably be better if offered as an 8 week course.

*Bluma very helpful, easy to understand.

* Thank you Dr. Champine for a great summer.  I did not realize how interesting bacteria could be and you made it fun.

*Dr. Bluma was very helpful and encouraging in the lab.  Her assistance was greatly appreciated.  She was very approachable and helpful.

*Thought class might be not as stressful for students when given 4 tests throughout semester.  Like 1 test a week- a test every Friday.  Not near as overwhelming or as much material to cover that way.  Enjoyed you as a teacher!

*Miya is great, pay her more.  She helped me understand lab so much easier.

*I have really enjoyed this course, I have a great deal of respect for both Dr. Champine and Dr. Bluma as brelyst and educators.  The structure and handouts were very effective learning tools and helped to make what could be an overwhelming topic managable.  Sincere Thanks—CDC

*Instructor could balance time a little better.  Sometimes goes into information not needed.

Fall 2004 Lecture

*I liked the class very much.  Dr. Champine is a great professor.  The only thing I would change is more tests on less material.  They are too long and cover too much.

*The only thing I disliked about this class is that there are only two regular exams that cover way more material then they should.

*If at all possible, in the future I think there should be more tests (4 instead of 2).  This way maybe students wouldn’t feel so overwhelmed with information.  There is a lot to remember and forget at the same time.  Special study strategies maybe is a good thing to go over as well.

*I thought tests could have been made easier by giving study guides because online tests were not similar.

*Dr. Champine was always willing to work with us so that we would understand the material, even if we had little to no background so that we would do well in the course.  Good job Dr. C.

*I have really enjoyed this course so far.  This has been one of the few classes where I have found some practical use for.  I also enjoy Dr. Champine’s instructions.  There is absolutely no reason why one should do bad in his class.  He’s awesome!

*Needs to have more tests, not just two tests.  Too much material on one test to cover.

*Class was dull sometimes, but probably couldn’t be helped.  Lab was great!

*Great class with great teacher!  Thoroughly enjoyed it!

*There should be more tests covering fewer chapters.

*This was my favorite Bio class!

*I thought the course was a bit broad in its concepts.  I expected it to be a step up from BI 190, but it was actually easier.

*This instructor did very good.  His enthusiasm for the students and the help he provided made this class fun and enjoyable.

*The past on-line exams really helped in studying for tests.

Fall 2004 Lab-Section 1

*Was a great lab.  Well thought out and executed.

*Teacher was very helpful in every aspect of the course including providing ample time for discussion in office hours.

*This lab was a lot of fun.  Dr. Champine is a good instructor.  I learned a lot.

*Lab is definitely the best part of the course!  I was actually excited and motivated to get out of bed and come to class.  Fun and entertaining.

*This class was a blast!  I learned practical and interesting information that will not only benefit my intellectual growth but my career as well.  Dr. Champine and Natalie were very helpful too.  I like the fact that they took the time to actually talk to me.  I actually felt like a student, not a number.  Thank You!

*Lab was fun, I like how he slipped in a joke every now and then.  Natalie was awesome, she is a great person.

*Dr. Champine was an extremely helpful teacher.  He was always willing to answer questions and made sure concepts were fully understood.  I really enjoyed this class.

Fall 2004 Lab-Section 2

*You did a great job!  Thank You. I especially liked your reference to Led Zeppelin in Lecture.

Spring 2005 IDEA Written Comments

* Good teacher!!!

* Excellent teacher!

* Enjoyed unknown.  Having old tests helpful.

* Dr. Champine was a model professor in his concern for students’ understanding of class material and of what was going on in class.  Also, his availability outside of scheduled classes was very helpful.

* Dr. Champine is a very good teacher.  He explains everything very well and makes the class enjoyable.  He is also very helpful in helping you to understand.

* The lectures were at times very boring.  However Dr. Champine is a great teacher.  You can really tell he cares about learning and his students.  I would definitely recommend Dr. Champine to everyone in the Biology field.

* Great class, great teacher.  Confusing on what would be on tests – study everything!

* It was sometimes unclear how everything going on in lab related to the course.

* Nathalie is great – please keep her in the department!  The in-class activities and study guides were very helpful – thank you!

* I felt that this course was quite intriguing.  One suggestion may be to eliminate all the structures and such from the handouts and just show them on the overhead.  This would lessen confusion.

* I like all the class.  Its not a hard class as long as you do all the homework assignments.  They really help you understand the material better plus alot of questions relate to notes on the test.

* Cool teacher  cool class!  This class really made me look at microbiology more closley.  I learned some neat things in here, and the lab really kept me interested.  I recommend this class to anyone!

* I think there should be more tests for the amount of material.  Maybe break it up into 5 or 6 50 point tests.  Otherwise there is so much material per test only about a 1/3 of what I studied was actually on it.

* I really enjoyed the class and learned a lot.  The subject matter was difficult for me, and it would have been helpful to more specifically address the topics that will be on upcoming tests if they are different than those on the practice tests.  Other than that, I rate this course and instructor as excellent!

* Covers alot of material, makes the topic interesting – less technical (proteins) than the prerequisite BI 190.

* I have taken other courses in biology and chemistry from SEMO and other institutions.  By far it is my opinion that Dr. Champine is an outstanding instructor.  The material of this course is not easy to understood, it requires time and detication on the students part.  Dr. Champine is an instructor who can help students if they are willing.

* I am leaving!!

* May want to hand out assignments before tests so they can be filled out while we are working in lab.  May want to explain the test results on the handouts so we can look back.

* He is a very good teacher; the best I’ve had at SEMO.

* I have enjoyed this class – BUT the lab was very confusing, unclear and unorganized.  If these test would have been done a little slower and more thorough I would have gained much more – DOING 3-4 test in 2 hours leads to confusion and not much gained.  Then a week later looking at them gives you not much to remember.  Less experiments and more time with them would be better.

* The lecture part of BI 200 was very interesting.  The material that was covered was difficult yet interesting.  Dr. Champine does a really good job explaining the material.  There is just enough covered in lecture for easy learning of the material.  The in class assignments, extra credit (+5 pts), and the lecture topic sheets really help with the learning of material.  The lab helps you get a good hands on approach to the class.  One thing I would change is the amount that is covered in each lab time period.

* Dr. Champine is definitely an expert in his field of study – microbiology.  I respect him for this.  However, the class was poorly structured.  I felt he should’ve started with the history lectures first; then, he should’ve moved on to the other areas of the course.

* I think this course should be a prerequisite for biochemistry.

Summer 2005 BI200 IDEA Written Comments

BI 200

* I like lab.

* I was a bit confused what was going on in lab because so much was going on at once.

* Dr. Champine is often too soft spoken.  I feel the course would benefit from an increased amount of time in the lab.

* Excellent course.

* I liked the way the labs were set up by explaining what we were doing.  I never felt lost in lab which made in more enjoyable.  Dr. Champine deserves a raise – he’s an awesome teacher!

* I really enjoyed this class.  However, I think that it would be better as an 8-week summer class, so there was more time for students to absorb and really understand the information, instead of being so intense for four weeks.  Just a suggestion.

* Even though this class has a lot of content to take in, in a short amount of time, I have learned a lot and I have enjoyed it.

* Dr. Champine is one of the best instructors I’ve had at SEMO.  He appears to enjoy teaching and to really care about whether or not the students gain the most possible from the course.  It really helped to have Maija assisting in the lab.  Great course, I’d recommend it to anyone!  Very well run and well organized.

* Dr. Champine is a great teacher.  He is the best I have had in my college career.

Fall 2005 IDEA Written Comments

* Make powerpoints of the notes from in class. If someone has to miss class, your powerpoints were more in depth, so it was a little easier to catch up, rather than copy another students notes, but that packets are the best, it forces students to pay attention and not skip class. Just a way you can do both.

* I like the in-class ass., they can help our grade & make us want to come to class. I really like the microbezoo website. I think you should incorporate more fun assignments from there, like each month an assignment about the microbe of the month.

* I enjoyed this class

* This course was good, but I thought that the tests were sometimes too long or over to much information.

* This class was very well taught. Dr. Champine explained things clearly & answered any questions that students might have.

* Overheads & some notes were really hard to see from back of class. But very nice teacher;extremely accomodating to to students. Fair teacher. Old exams helped a lot

* I thought the powerpoint presentations were easier to understand than the notes on the board & overheads. I wish there were more inclass/take home assignments to earn pts. from

* This was an excellent course, Dr. Champine is very fair & I would recomend this for anyone. This has been one of my favorite classes so far

* Give more homework

* The Best Class to take at SEMO!

* Dr. Champine is a very good teacher and makes the class interesting!

* I really liked when you used the overhead project and board to teach your lessons. It was really easy for me to keep up with what you were teaching. The website for the class is also helpful.

* Dr. Champine is a very good teacher. He presents the information in a way that is easy to understand, and includes pictures in his lectures, which is helpful. He always relates the subject matter to tangible things students understand.

* Dr. Champine is an excellent teacher. He is very smart & can teach this subject matter of a level students can understand it He does whatever he can to help students understand microbiology!

* explained material very well; helpful website; in-class assignments & not just exams; I enjoyed having him as a teacher; he made it interesting & fun.

* This was a really great class. Champine is an ECELLENT teacher! I learned a lot and it was all very interesting.

* Dr. Champine did a good job, teaching. When needed he changed his was of teaching to help his students better understand. I think he is a good teacher.

* Overall this instructer was very well at teaching and communicating to the class. He sometimes didn't explain things as in depth as they were on the test. He always there to help you. He made the class fun. I think not having power points and just wkshts works out well. Great Job!

* I really enjoyed this course because of its structure. Dr. Champine has a way of explaining difficult concepts in a clear and consice manner.

* It wasn't that the course was bad or even the teaching, it was more that I just suck at this kind of stuff. I've always had trouble with similar subjects. I think Dr. Champine's teaching methods were just fine. No complaints!

* If the test follow the old test closely encourage students to follow those test more than notes when studying. I started out studing notes and the questions on the front, now that I study old test I see a big diffence in my grade. Other than that keep up the good work! :)

* I've really enjoyed this class-Thanks!- One thing that I have found to be helpful is an on-line Question and Answer Forum where students can post a brief question and you would log on once or twice a week to answer them.

* I was not looking forward to taking this class. It is very challenging subject matter. Dr. Champine taught things so amateurs could understand them. He is such a kind, approachable man. He understands that students have more going on than just microbiology. However, he assigns challenging, but possible to complete assignments and allows opportunities to raise your grade if you are willing to work hard. Keep it up!

* SI sessions & old exams are very helpful. Keep those up! I like that we were able to acquire points in other ways than just tests! Overall, a good instructor, but a difficult course!

* I really enjoyed the course & appreciated the different ways you went about teaching it kept me awake & focused!

Fall 2005 BI-200 Lab IDEA Written Comments

* Dr. Champine was an excellent lab instructor, waking up for an 8 AM class wasn't bad as long as it was micro lab.

* Out of class lab work/tests are hard to plan for

* Dr. Champine is an excellent teacher. He explains the material very thoroughly. This class is relatively straight forward if the material is read over outside of class. It defenately requires studying.

* I enjoyed your humor, it made things that would not be that interesting much more enjoyable. I also like how you related things to things that are concrete to us. Like your ex. of dandruff today <= those are the things I will remember

* I didn't know how I would like this course when I first enrolled. I am so glad I took this class with Dr. Champine he really made the material interesting!

* I really enjoyed this lab, it was a lot of fun and Dr. Champine was an excellent teacher. He and the other staff was always willing to help you if you had a problem or stuck on the unknown! I learned a lot and enjoyed this learning experience.

* Microbiology lab was my favorite class this semester! Dr. Champine is an excellent teacher, and he always made sure to relate the things we were studying to real-life situations. This made the class very interesting & I learned a lot. I could tell Dr. Champine was very knowledgable and passionate about the subject, and he passed that on to his students.

Spring 2006 BI-200 Lab and Lecture IDEA Written Comments

* Dr. Champine is a very intelligent, kind, and humble man.  Dr. Champine has to be one of the greatest professors I have ever had.  He has a natural ability to teach BI 200 and does a phenomenal job.  I absolutely admire and recommend Dr. Champine to any student interested in biology.

* I believe this was a great course, but too much out-of-class – IN-class work was required.  I have no problem doing homework, etc. out of class, but having to go to the lab was very difficult.  It was hard to work with the hours of the lab (to 4 p.m., no Wednesdays) and have a “real” job (8-5) every day along with class.

Great instructor, really cares about students progress.

* Although I am not a fan of microbiology, Dr. Champine made the course enjoyable and interesting.  I have a more positive view on microbiology now.

* Dr. Champine is an excellent instructor.  He takes the time to personally get to know each student.  This helps the students be more comfortable around him and ask more questions and other things.  The only bad thing is that I think the tests are way too long, when you can’t finish a test in 50 minutes it is too long and hard.  But overall Dr. Champine is an excellent instructor and made me actually enjoy this class.

* Dr. Champine is a great teacher.  He always asks if anyone needs help and is always there to help you if you need it.  He is funny (when he wants to be) and is very nice.

* Tests were very difficult if you didn’t have the previous semester’s tests.  Enjoyed Champine’s enthusiasm for the subject.  “Administrative breaks” were somewhat annoying.  I prefer good old fashioned note taking as opposed to filling in blanks of a powerpoint packet.

* I enjoyed this class very much.  Dr. Champine is always willing to help student to better understand course material.

* I think the course is easier to understand I digest when powerpoint presentations are used, rather than the hard to see transparencies.

* I appreciated that each and every homework assignment “forced” us to study as well as helping us to find “holes” in our notes in order to obtain better studying material and overall improve our grade.  I feel that the instructor made it exceptionally hard for a student to fail by providing these homework assignment as well as SI.

* Overall I learned a lot throughout the course.  After taking this class I actually like microorganisms better.  Throughout the course I received a better understanding of the taxa involve din microorganisms.

* This is a very hard course to rate because there is so much information given.  I feel we needed more time to have learned more and have it be more clear.

* Dr. Champine is a very thoughtful and understanding professor.  He was always fair and was always available to help students.  The only suggestion I have is to make this course more interesting.  The subject matter can be boring and something needs to be done to raise students’ interest.

* Know the material!  Study throughout the semester, not just the day or two before an exam.

* Dr. Champine, you are the best teacher I had so far.  I enjoyed class and lab and had a lot of fun doing lab activities.  I hope that I will have another class with you.

* Dr. Champine is very good; however, his exams are very long and contain a lot of material.

* The class work seems higher than 200 level.

* The main thing that I did for this class was remembering stuff which was really hard, but I really enjoyed.

* I thought this was a good course and Dr. Champine is an excellent instructor, but I felt an information overload in this course.  There was so much information I felt it hard at times to learn the information accurately and be able to incorporate it on the tests.

* Test are too long and complicated!

* One thing that needs improvement is the transparencies.  Sometimes they were very difficult to read especially when you were writing on them.  Other than that it was a great lecture class.

* I enjoyed taking this course and learned a lot from it.  This course forced me to relearn some biology that I forgot and also learned new material which is very useful for me as a biology major.

*Exams were tough:  good class though

* The old tests that were placed on-line were a big help with the tests.  This class made me want to switch my major to go into something in microbiology.

* I loved this lab.  Was my favorite class this semester.  The only down side to is was that it was at 8 a.m.  :)

Summer 2006-BI-200

I thought this was a tough course.  Alot of the material covered was difficult, but Dr. Champine is always willing to answer questions and help.  Overall, I think Dr. Champine does an excellent job teaching this course but it takes alot of individual effort to do well.

Lots and lots of homework and a lot of information crammed into 4 weeks.  Pretty tough but Dr. Champine made it bearable.

Very good instructor.  A little vague about some important points sometimes.

This course has a lot of information to learn in a very short time, but Dr. Champine does a great job of making it fun and interesting.  He is very understanding and you can tell he wants his students to do well.

This class was difficult in 4 wks., but having the help sheet for the test really helped take the pressure off cramming, so we could understand the ideas and process w/o having to memorize what a certain protein on a certain bacteria does.  I enjoyed this class.

This microbiology class taught me many things I did not know and the instructor was very effective in teaching the lessons so that everyone understood.

This has been a very tough class, however, I’ve really enjoyed it.  The fast pace of these last four weeks has been daunting, but I can’t hold that against you.  The presentations and handouts you created for us were a major asset and I don’t know what I would have done without them.

This is a really hard class to take in four weeks.  It’s so much information to cram in.  I liked how the lecture was set up w/ powerpoints.  When we got into the lab, I thought it was kind of chaotic.  There were too many labs to do in not enough time -> we may have got them done, but I didn’t learn enough.  I was so worried about finished that I forgot what I was supposed to be learning.  The first and last weeks were very interesting and the middle two I did not like.

I definitely feel that this class has enlightened me.  Coming in with no prior knowledge of microbiology, I am leaving with so much useful information that relates to the world of health, doctors, and even myself.  Test 3 stressed me out and it took a lot of work to get a grasp on everything and I felt this section was a little unorganized.  A big overview may have helped.  Otherwise, it was a great class, and I enjoyed it.

This was the best class that I have taken @ SEMO.  Dr. Champine is by far the best Professor that I have had in class.  He took this 4-wk course and made the material easier to understand and easy to remember.  B/c he taught this course I am now VERY interested in microbiology and it has opened my eyes to an entire new field of science that I can study.

Dr. Champine made this 4-week course intense and exciting.  I was focused on learning the material and dedicated to understanding the concepts taught because of the vigorous nature of the teaching, assignments, and tests.  I have learned more information in the past 4 weeks than I could have ever imagined, but I was able to do so because of the great instructor and the organization of the class structure.

I took the summer course and at first Dr. Champine seemed a get to work stuck-in-the-mud but once you got to know him you really began to understand that he not only wanted to but enjoyed teaching.  A professor who obviously wants to get to know you and help you do your best in the course makes the class 100% better.  That is exactly what Dr. Champine did!  He learned the students names, involved the students in discussion, and made most of the material interesting.  Overall, as a visiting student @ SEMO for the summer, I had a great experience and learned alot.  Just one comment though ... sometimes he can make you feel dumb when asking a question.

Pro. Champine is a true teacher.  He didn’t assign readings and leave it up to the students to learn for themselves.  Champine did his job unlike many “teachers’ in this learning institution.  The only thing I would change about this class is the clarity of lab material.  I feel I could have done much better in this class had I known where to look for answers in the lab.  Handouts that are more defined and referenced would help.

This class was a good experience and not only did I enjoy the class I also enjoyed the professor.  I’ve learned alot in this class and it was definitely worth all the hard work!

I liked this instructor alot.  He makes sure you understand before he moves on.  Also when lecturing, I noticed that he reads the facial expressions of his students which I think is very important because it helps him realize when they aren’t understanding something.  Also he keeps the students involved in lecture by asking you specific questions about your assigned organism in class.  It helped keep you awake in a 2 hr lecture.  Very good.  Teachers like him make hard courses not so bad.

2006 Fall BI-200 Lecture

Dr. Champine is an excellent teacher. It is nice to have a professor who really cares about his students.  Maya is cool too.

I really enjoyed this course.  Dr. Champine made class interesting and teaches it in a way that makes me want to learn more and succeed. He encourages students and you can tell he loves what he does.  Everyday he made an effort to make lecture and lab enjoyable. He helped me decide what exactly I want to do in biology field. Thank you for making class fun.

Great class, great teacher!

I think this class should be 5 credits and meet more during the week.

I think the lecture exams are too hard and there is too much information to sock in for each exam.

This was my only semester at SEMO before I started nursing school.  I am glad I had Dr. Champine, because he is and excellent teacher who is approachable and intelligent.

The lectures were sometimes hard to follow because so much information was provided at once.  Other than that Dr. Champine did all he could to help us learn & get excited about Microbiology.

Dr. Champine was always willing to help & answer questions you had about things going on in class.  He was really good about explaining things & helping you to understand the concepts.

It is easy to see that Dr. Champine enjoys what he does.  I really enjoyed this class.  I like the homework because it gives people a chance to make up some points they may have missed on a test. Some people are not good test takers!! I really liked doing the mixed unknown it was fun but I feel that I learned a lot from it!!

I had no desire to take this class, but it is a requirement for my major.  This class is difficult & consisted of a lot of outside work.  Though the class was hard, I think Dr. Champine did his best to make it easier for his students.

Overall, this course has been interesting and fun.  Dr. Champine does not give assignments, pre-labs, or other homework items that are impossible to get 100% on.  What he asks is stuff that can easily be found in your notes or textbooks.  I would like to someday take another course taught by this professor.

Excellent course.  There is a lot of material covered, but between lab and lecture, you really learn a lot.  Excellent course for anyone interested in medicine or health fields.  Very interesting course material, presented effectively and tested on fairly.

The class was tough, but very interesting.  The lab allowed me to learn more about the field.  This being the first Microbiology course I’ve taken, I was very impressed.

Thanx Dr. Champine, this class was good.  Wish we could have done more lab because that’s what it’s all about.

Most people I talked to said micro was ridiculously hard, but champine is clear and to the point and tests over important subjects and doesn’t try and put non-relevant matters in class.

Dr. Champine is one of the professors that makes me proud to be a student at Southeast.  He genuinely caves for his students success and does not try to score students into learning by giving out a horrible course grade. Highly recommended.

Honestly, I wasn’t psyched to be enrolled in this course.  But I feel like I gained a great deal from being involved with it.  I still don’t think I’d choose this as a career path, but I have a greater appreciation for the field itself now.

Spring 2007 - BI 200  (Lab)

Dr. Champine took an interest in his students learning answering questions, general attitude, etc. and was always available to help in any way he could.  Presented a wide amount of information and related this info to outside world.  A prime example of an excellent teacher.

Dr. Champine created the best lab I have taken in college.  He really cares about the students, seems to be always happy to help with any problems in class you might have.

One of the reasons I did much more work in the course was the return on investment!  I got so much out of this class. I plan on taking more with this professor in the future – even though not required by my degree program.  Best tuition money I ever spent!

Maija is absolutely wonderful and gorgeous!  She definitely deserves a raise for her hard work and conviction!  Champine is an extremely nice person whom always goes out of his way to help his students.  I am very very glad I took him as my teacher!  HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Dr. Champine is an excellent professor who genuinely cares about his students’ understanding of the material at hand.  His class is always interesting and he makes the subject matter more bearable for those of us who aren’t biology majors.  Dr. Champine is highly recommended!

Lab was fun!  Lecture wasn’t as fun but the slides and pics and handouts made learning it easier!  I took you cuz I have heard nothing but good things about you in the past.  Thanks.

Doubt it can be helped but at times so many thing were done at once that it became hard to keep things straight.

Dr. Champine is a great teacher.  I really loved coming to lab.  He made it fun and interesting.  HE is constantly cracking jokes along the way which makes you WANT to pay attention.  Excellent teacher!!!!

There was always a lot of work to do in lab, but Dr. Champine’s laid back teaching style and helpfulness made it very easy to deal with.  Great teacher!

Overall a great course.

This has probably been the most enjoyable lab I’ve ever taken in high school or college.  2 hours flies by and I know I’ve learned a ton.  Nonetheless, I didn’t get nearly as stressed out as I have in the labs in the past.

Spring 2007 BI 200 – Lecture

Good teacher, kept class interesting.

Dr. Champine rocks!

Class was well organized and we stayed close with the syllabus.  I learned a lot more than I thought I would.  No complaints!

Dr. Champine is an excellent teacher, highly recommended!

I really enjoyed your kindness.  Great teacher.

Dr. Champine is a very knowledgable and thorough teacher who seems to care about students and their understanding of microbiology including its fundamentals and principles.  He is very good teacher who aided students w/ handouts etc. to facilitate the learning process.  Overall a very nice man and teacher.  I would recommend this teacher and class to others.

Dr. Champine cared a lot about how the students did in class.  The only thing that I wish would have been different is more tests with less material on them instead of three big tests.  Overall, this class was great and I would recommend it to anyone.

Sometimes the material was confusing, not explained well enough.  I’m sure if I would have asked questions I would have gotten a better understanding.  Feels like I mostly just copy the notes and don’t pick the information up easily.  Champine is very nice and helps you when you ask for it.

Dr. Champine is such a nice person, however, I really did not care for his teaching style.  He really does not explain things all that well, and I believe I could have gotten the same grade if I only came to class once in a while and just got notes from others.  However, I do think he is very understanding, fair and helpful, I just thought this course jumped around A LOT and could have been presented in a way that was less confusing and easier to understand.

Sometimes it felt like we were trying to get so much done in one class period that we glazed over important topics.  Maybe there should be 3 lectures a week making it a 4 hour course (including lab).

I have worked harder in this class than any other I have taken, but I have also learned more.  The way you structure the assignments made it easy to keep on track and not get behind.  You made this subject more interesting to me than I expected and I would like to learn more about this subject in depth in the future.

I really liked this course and the practice/example tests online are a really good idea to help students study and prepare for upcoming exams.

I think Dr. Champine is an excellent teacher and he truly deserves a pay raise!

Summer 2007 BI-200

The cheatsheets were helpful.

Great class from a great teacher.  He keeps you laughing and because of him and how he presented the material I have found a great intrest in microbiology.

Dr. Champine is an energetic instructor who seems to enjoy his job.  He makes what can be a dull, boring subject a fun one.  He is entertaining and makes class interactive.  Very positive experience!

I enjoyed your class.  The four week session was kind of a cram, but I found the subject material and the way it was presented to be more interesting than I had originally anticipated.  I really enjoyed lab.

Very good teacher.  I learned a lot and would recommend that others take this course from this instructor.

Really did love the course!  I’m a bio major and this was my favorite class I’ve had!  Teacher is great and shows genuine interest in the science and his students.  Very smart and funny!  Best lab I’ve ever had!  I was getting bored with science (which I didn’t think I ever would) but this course changed that!

He was a great teacher who made this class seem not as bas as I was expecting.

I was intimidated by the intensity of this course initially, but your teaching style was wonderful and lab was a worthwhile challenge.  Thank you!

b.  BI345/245 – Laboratory Methods in Biological Chemistry

Spring 2003

* This was probably the first class I have taken at SEMO that was worth my time and money. Dr. Champine did a superior job of applying things I learned in genetics to the lab. This application has tremendously helped me understand reading material in more efficient manner!

* I liked the experiments that we did in class this semester.

* Maybe have some small quizzes during the semester to make sure we understand. I like the in class assignments; these help me to know what is important. Maybe don’t put so much work at the end due to finals and all.

* I really enjoyed the class. The “hands-on” opportunities made learning easier and a lot more interesting. My only dislikes were the numerous activities and assignments that we crammed into the last few weeks of class.

* I personally thought that this class was very informative and interesting. The instructor was always willing to help students when needed. I would suggest this course to other students. The instructor really showed an interest in his students learning.

* 2. Could have done more experiments rather than working on assignments on notebooks so often. 16. Material was fairly easy- more challenging experiments. 32. Less class time used for assignments and notebooks, we can do those outside of class. Do more experiments in class so we can have knowledge about machines and procedures.

Spring 2003 IDEA Written Comments

* We need music when doing lab stuff.

* Dr. Champine is truly one of the best professors at Southeast. I loved this class because all the labs we did related to previous material learned in genetics and other biology classes. My favorite things were the spectophotometer and gel labs.

* The amount of “busywork” in this class is amazing. I think that more theory and reason could be taught instead of just how. Apply this stuff to other disciplines. There are people other than micro majors in this class.

Fall 2003

* This class was very helpful.  I now have a clearer understanding of the lab techniques that I’ve heard of throughout my biology education.  I wish I would have taken it sooner.

* This class was a lot of work, but I learned quite a bit throughout the semester.  Dr. Champine was a good instructor and was always willing to help his students!  Thanks! :)

* Enjoyed class very much.  The only thing you might add is some descriptions in laymen’s terms in the class when we are waiting for a process to finish.  Overall I regard Dr. Champine as one of the easiest professors to talk with.  Good course and good professor.

* This course was fun.  I learned a lot of useful info that was relevant to lab work.  Sometimes it was hard to keep up with all of the material, notebooks, and assignments though because we covered a lot and had other courses to worry about.  Good class overall though!

Spring 2004

* I thought this class provided a great background in general lab activities.  In addition, the labs were explained very well and the handouts were easy to follow.

* A lot of the class was busywork.  I think if you take quant and BI450 this class should definitely be waived.

* I really enjoyed this class.  The only suggestion I would have is letting us know further in advance on notebook checks and already have assigned what is going in them.

* I enjoyed this class.

* This class was by far my favorite this semester.  I learned a lot of valuable techniques that I hope to put to use someday in my career.  I look forward to taking classes with Dr. Champine in the future.

Spring 2005 Idea Written Comments

* Try not to load the last 3 weeks of class with half of a semesters work, we are also taking other classes besides this one, that also require work.  Very interesting subjects, try doing a DNA prep and gel off our own bodies such as hair.

* Dr. Champine is an awesome instructor – he explains things clearly and concisely and is willing to explain as many times as necessary for students to understand.  BI 345 is a must-take for all people who will one day work in a lab.  It is very good at preparing a student for this.  Overall, an EXCELLENT course!

* Excellent teacher.  Always available to help a student.  This class is very interesting and is filled with useful information.  Very fast paced with a lot of work involved.

* Dr. Champine is an excellent instructor.  It is clear from his actions that he cares if the students learn the material.  It would probably be helpful in the future to spread the workload out a bit more, though.

* This class was a great Introduction to the technique to Biology.  This class provide my lot of useful knowledge and skill that I will use.

* Dr. Champine is very patient with students and always eager to help.

* After taking this course, I feel more prepared for my job ahead.  After graduation I will be working in a laboratory doing research.  Due to taking this I feel very prepared.  I thought Dr. Champine was an excellent teacher and knew the material very well.  He knew how to relate the material so that it was easier to understand.

Spring 2006 IDEA Written comments

The only downfall of the course would be the varying due dates of homework; often undecided or long after an activity.

I learned a lot of techniques in this course that will be valuable to me in my future career.  I enjoyed having Dr. Champine as a teacher because he is so nice, easygoing, and really cares about his students’ success.  He was always available to help me anytime I had a question about this class.

I think Dr. Champine is a great teacher.  He always manages to answer your questions without making you feel like an idiot.  He is extremely helpful when you have questions.  As far as the course goes, I really enjoyed it.  We did a lot of hands-on activities, which I enjoy and I learned a lot of techniques that are used in a lab.  The only problem with the course is that the due dates for the notebook are usually a long time after we did the lab.  That’s the only thing I would change.

The assignments seem a bit disorganized, but I do understand that this course is being restructured.  I had a strong desire to take this course.  This is because it offers a practical application to theory we’ve covered in previous courses.  I have no doubt that as this course develops, it should become easier.  Packaging could make this course easier.  The manuscript work helped greatly.  The format help has improved my report writing.

This class felt very unorganized.  The manuscript could have used an example, to make the writing clearer.  I often was unsure about what was expected.

Spring 2007 BI 245

Good job!

Class was tough but interesting.  Dr. Champine was always willing to help and answer any questions.

c.  BI445/645 – Microbial Physiology

Fall 2000

* The lecture was very effective.  The handouts provided assisted me a lot.  I had problems with lab though.  I never really understood what I was supposed to be doing or learning in the lab.  I think that a better explanation of why we’re doing things may be helpful.  Overall, this was an effective course.

* Good points – available outside of class, grading on tests and allowing us to use notes for exams.  Work on- clearer lectures (sometimes difficult to follow), return homework sooner, be clearer on what’s expected for assignments.

* I think that the class was very interesting and I learned a lot of new material.  The only problems I had with the class were it took me a while to catch on as to where the class was heading.  Perhaps a clearer explanation of the class would have been helpful.  Also, we were flooded with handouts and it was hard to keep things organized.  I would suggest the handouts be grouped together in a packer like we got in BI130/140.

* Always there if you need help was one of the strong points.  Bad points were that the homework was hard to understand and sometimes the test questions were too.

* In some cases, I thought the lecture material was a little easy for a 400 level course, especially at the beginning.  As an instructor, you should try to be more confident while lecturing and instructing individually with students.  You know the material quite well, it just sometimes does not come across that way.

* For me, the lab was the most enjoyable aspect of this course.  I learned many new techniques and concepts.  As a chemistry major, these are things I would not ordinarily have a chance to do in my general bio prereqs and minor classes.

* The study guides for the exams were really helpful, as were the expectation sheets for the manuscripts.  The class, overall, was very interesting.

Fall 2002

* BI445 is a great course. I will recommend this course to my friends.

* This class was enjoyable. The only thing I recommend changing would be the length of the test.

* All in all a good learning experience. At times the material was a little hard to follow, but I guess that’s the nature of the discipline.

* Champine is an excellent professor. He’s very helpful and willing to help the student learn all of the info taught in class. Champine is one of the best instructors throughout the university.

* Initial lectures somewhat confusing, perhaps slower pace or better view of the overall picture would be more helpful.

* Dr. Champine is a wonderful professor. He has always went out of his way to help me understand homework and material covered in class. The only changes I would recommend would be to add cell molec. to the prereq’s for this class!

Fall 2004

*While the course was difficult, it was extremely informative and Dr. Champine is an excellent professor.  I thoroughly enjoyed the course and would recommend Dr. Champine as a professor to anyone for any course.  He is very passionate about his field, and excites others about it as well.

*Dr. Champine is definitely one of the best biology professors I have had.  Although he is highly intelligent, he is not “cocky” about it like some other professors.  This encourages students to answer more questions in class without being embarrassed about what the professors comments will be if the answer is incorrect.  I feel the class was a good mix of lab and lecture and I would recommend this class to anyone interested in microbiology.

*Dr. Champine is one of the best professors here at Southeast.  Other science professors should take note of his performance and the way his students respect him, like him and succeed in his courses.  He takes a genuine interest in our education.  That is what I will remember when I leave here.

*Thanks for your help in this class.  You do show concern for your students.  On the majority of the homework, it required extra calculations that were not in the text book or the reserved Brock text book.  So I recommend that you lecture on basic chemistry/algebra or have a book reserved that do those types of calculations.  Also, when you assign the manuscript, please give at least a 2 week notice for due dates.  I have enjoyed your class and you as well as a professor.  Thanks.

*Champine was great, although I felt the lecture was dull.  The class was not what I was expecting.  The name of this class should be Quantitative Research Methods for Prokaryotes and not Microbial Physiology.  There is too much math and not enough learning, and the physical description and growth conditions of the microbes.

*Dr. Champine was a very good teacher.  He went out of his way to help me pass the class.  Thanks for being such a great teacher.

Fall 2005 BI 487

Section-01

* The course load was overwhelming for a 1 hr. course, but it all worked out fine. I'm not sure that the Kathy Jarvis project helps students that are already prepared for future endeavors,(like grad school, professional school, etc) but it might be nice for younger students she had lots of info. All in all the course was a good one & Dr. Champine did a great job.

* The criticism was welcomed, however, the grading was far to strick for this class. I felt some people should have acquired higher grades than they received.

* This class was much more fun than I expected! It was a fun learning environment.

* Kathy was very helpful but kind of a hassle due to time constraints. Good idea w/ resumes & grad. applications very helpful

* I came into this class not knowing what to expect. but I really enjoyed it.

* Isn't really a class where a professor can be rated. Overall I thought grading was fair but other studen'ts dru seem to have legitimate complaints.

BI 487-02

* I now feel more comfortable giving a presentation.

* This is a 1 cr. Course and there was way to much expected to be done. We are biologist, and as such, we should have been graded on knowledge and comprehension, not on our public speaking ability.

* Dr. Champine is an excellent professor. However, I think there is too much required for this class to be only 1 credit hour.

BI 487-03

* I felt that the amount of work required for this course was excessive considering its hour value. In other words, I felt like we were taking a 3 hour course and getting one hour of credit.

* Dr. Champine is very nice & fair. Very busy so sometimes hard to catch in office but gave very timely replies to e-mail (usually within an hour or two. He also wasn't afraid to admit that he didn't know everything. The course itself requires a lot of work for only 1 credit hour

* Would have like to of had grades sooner. Was as clear in why points were taken off.

* Think this class had too much work for a 1 HR credited class. Need to encrease hours or decrease the amount of work. Great Teacher, very helpful and I liked his criticism on my presentation.

* Great class!

2006 Fall BI 487-02

I like the resume assignment!

I enjoyed this class because it truly helped me to develop my oral presentation skills and helped with my use of powerpoint.

Assignments were very helpful & relevant.

2006 Fall BI 487-03

The feed back I received after my presentation was kinda scary at first; this was the first time I’ve heard immediate feedback & been asked questions by a professor.  But, it did help me learn how to improve for the next time, & offered more ideas into my topic I had not yet considered.

This instructor did a very good job.  The coursework was an appropriate amount for the credit hours I was worth.  This instructor is one of the best evaluaters of oral presentation performance and taught me valuable tools to strengthen my oral presentation skills.

I really enjoyed this course because I learned about things that will help me in my professional career, and it allowed me to research a topic that I was intrested in.

I really enjoyed the course.  Dr. Champine was an excellent teacher.

Spring 2007 BI-154 (Lab)

Dr. Champine is a wonderful teacher and was very helpful in the lab.

Champine is an excellent professor.  He is very easily approachable and is willing to work with students.  He explained concepts very clearly and made it easy to understand.

I learned a lot in this course!  I would definitely recommend Dr. Champine.  Great class.
