BI200 Comments

BI200-01 General Microbiology Lab Spring 09

*This is one of the best classes of Southeast.  Dr. Champine makes this difficult class an entertaining and less formidable course.  I would highly reccomend it to anyone.

*I really enjoyed the class as a whole.  Lectures were sometimes difficult to follow.  The subject matter is difficult and we went through it very quickly.  A special thanks to Dr. Bluma and Emily.  They were very helpfull.

*I really enjoyed this course and found the lecture material fascinating.  My only complaint is that unit 3 lectures material seemed to be random at times, which made studying for the exam somewhat precarious.

*A lot of information was given and a lot of stuff to know.  Dr. Champine jumps around a lot and is sometimes hard to follow.  I think the amount of material he expects us to know is unrealistic and hard to memorize it all.  But I would recommend to take him as a lab teacher.  Excellent lab teacher and an okay lecturer.

*Although I really had to work hard to understand this material, I really enjoyed this class.  Having not had taken the pre-req course, this material was all new to me and much harder to grasp that it was for most students.  Dr. Champine was a great teacher and very approachable.

*The best science teacher I ever had.  I like all the beer conversations.

*This class was a great experience.  I learned valuable techniques and history of science.  Dr. Champine made the material easy to learn.

*One of the best teachers Ive had here @ semo!

*Very good professor, but very random at times.  Tends to jump from topic to topic very quickly, which is very confusing at times.  The handouts in lecture were very helpful in taking notes in class as well as prepatory for the exam.

*This was a fun class.  Some advice to future students, study early for the test and answer the review questions on the packets.  This will allow you to make a good grade.

*Put powerpoints on the Internet.

*Dr. Champine is a great teacher.  However, the tests are difficult, and if you want to do well you need to stay up to date in class and study several days in advance.  The biology jokes were the best part of the class.  I learned a lot, thanks for a great semester.

*Dr. Champine is a good teacher and he geniuenly cares about his students, but he tries to cover WAY TOO MUCH material, and on the test he crams everything in he can.  The class requires you to spend MOST of your time n it and if you have any other challenging classes that this is impossible.  He is still a great teacher, just needs to cut back on some of the subject matter.

*Great course, but I think it would be beneficial if the power pints followed the note a little closer.  Also, the website could use some updated tests and all of the handouts.

*:)

*Dr. Champine is an excellent teacher.  The material that was taught is difficult to understand, but he did a good job teaching.

BI200-01 General Microbiology Lecture Sp.09

*Mya was very helpful.

*Great professor!  Very knowledgable and approachable.

*The lab always helped with the lecture because they were tied together.

*Could tell he truly cares about all his students!

*This was a really great class.  Champine is one of the best instructors that I’ve had at Southeast.

*The teacher is specific on what he wants, like if you can’t draw he’ll count wrong on one of the assignments.  If I want to be an artist, I would be an art major.  Also he lies about test, he says he will have it out of 100 points then turns around and makes it out of 111 points.  Don’t trust what he says.

*This lab was fun I loved the clinical aspects of it.

*BI200 is the best class ever in SEMO I enjoyed class alot.  Thank you Dr. Champine.

BI200-02 General Microbiology Lab  Sp09

*Maya is pretty cool.  So is Meghan.  Dr. Champine is a good professor but he occasionally seems condescending.

*Dr. Bluma wasn’t very nice to me.  She mad me feel stupid.  She actually asked me if I was slow.  That greatly offended me.  Megan was a very helpful lab assisstant and made sure everyone had the material and answered questions.  She’s very good looking as well.  Dr. Champine is an excellent instructor and knows the material well.  I thought I got along with him and really took time to help students.

*Dr. Champine was a great lab teacher but I don’t think that we should have had practicals.  Megan was very helpful and always knew how to answer our questions.

*The quick feedback on assignments was highly advantageous to class satisfaction.  Dr. Bluma is slightly (very) scary/intimidating.

BI200-01  General Microbiology Su09

*Dr. Champine is an amazing teacher!  He is very knowledgable about everything regarding the course.  I had a difficult time staying after class to work on my unknown project because of my job and her was very considerate about the issue.  Dr. Champine is a great teacher and person.  Two thumbs up!

*Very good instructor.  Knowledgable about subject, and very down to earth.  Only thing is talks fast sometimes so have to be ready to catch certain information.

*Schedule exams on Monday.  You can still start the next topic on Friday.

*Might want to consider 8-week summer session.  Every other day lab might show better results, plus more time for unknown.

*Manage the class time better.  Almost everyday, most students stayed out an hour past class time.

*Dr. Champine is a wonderful professor and I wouldn’t want to take this course by anyone else.

*I really enjoyed this class though I dreaded it going in.  You made the summer semester as painless as possible and giving lots of homework and other assignments gave some leway on exams.

*Best teacher I’ve ever had.  Challenging but clear and responsibe.  Great teacher.

*Awesome professor!  He was always willing to stay after class and help a student.  Funny and very intelligent.  I wish you taught every Biology course!

BI245-01  Sp09

*This class had crazy hard material in it.  But we all suffered through and hopefully passed.

*Excellent class and students developed extraordinary laboratory skills.

*I learned a lot.

Champine Student Evaluation Comments

BI 200 Lecture  (30) Spring 2010

The notes were disorganized enough to be confusing and they made it hard to follow. The class sometimes was a little boring because occasionally it was difficult to follow along with the lectures.

Thanks for the useful website. While there was a ton of homework it saved my butt. Thanks for not making this class ridiculously hard.

Very unorganized class which made learning, comprehending and paying attention very difficult. Instructor knew information but couldn’t put it out there for students to grasp. Did not enjoy or get much out of the class at all.

The tests were over so much, I think it would have been easier to learn more information if there were more tests.

Very interesting class. I liked the opportunity for a lot of homework points. Tests were hard. Maybe consider four tests.

Great class! Possibly want to change my major towards this field.

Dr. Champine fits a lot of info into one lecture which makes it difficult come test time because there is so much info just for one test. I do appreciate though the handouts he gives. They’re helpful for studying.

There was so much information covered on test. Material that I didn’t think was too important would be covered on the test.

Overall, the class was ok. I felt that the “fill-in-the-blank” method of notes was non-beneficial since I rushed to write things down rather than listen to the lecture. I also felt that a lot of information was crammed in an exam—they should have been split into multiple exams.

I feel like there was too much crammed into the last portion of the class. His method of note taking was extremely unhelpful!

He is a very nice guy. I am doing well in this class, but I don’t feel as if I’ve really learned anything. I just have to cram random info to study for the test then “dump” it all out to get ready for the next test.

I thought that the assignments and their point value in your grade were good. I thought the tests were way too difficult. They covered too broad of a range of material. It was hard to know what to study.

Dr. Champine gives extremely good feedback and instruction. I think the second test material was somewhat difficult to study and may be better organized in the future.

Great course that I used in other biology courses.

A better study guide system for exams would help.

The lecture was sometimes unorganized and boring—jumped from topic to topic and back again—hard to follow sometimes.

BI 200-01 (17) Spring 2010

This was an interesting lab and I found I learned a lot of important techniques and tests. Sometimes, I found the hurried pace of the lad confusing.

I really enjoyed taking this lab and I feel that I learned a lot of applicable and real life knowledge. The unknown assignment was particularly interesting.

Enjoyed the lab portion very much. Dr. Bluma was extremely helpful throughout the semester which helped a lot in understanding the tests.

The prerequisites for the course should be stressed more to students before entering the course.

I really enjoyed this lab. I learned a lot that I can apply to my future career. Dr. Bluma and Dr. Champine are excellent instructors.

Favorite class.

The lab is much more useful than the lecture.

I really enjoyed this lab. One suggestion: towards the end everything felt really rushed and it would have been better for me to fully understand each test if we had more time.

The amount of coursework in the end was very stressful, especially with everything else going on.

The lab was by far the best thing about this course. Also the mixed unknowns were extremely fun.

I felt that the organization could have been a little better. I felt very rushed doing lab assignments, pre-labs, practical, oral presentation, and unknown paper in the last three weeks.

BI 245-01 (10) Spring 2010

This course was very helpful in gaining a broader understanding in this field.

It would be helpful to be able to concentrate on one project at a time. On the other hand, I like that the time is utilized fully.

I think we should spread out the assignments over the semester better. We are bombarded at the end with so many assignments.

There were too many assignments in this class! Busy work.

The assignments were long and tedious and often not worthwhile.

BI 200 (11) Summer 2010

Awesome class with an excellent instructor!

Hard, but teacher helped me out a lot and understood when it came to my surgery time. He was great, Thank you.

Great teacher! Extremely helpful; wanted us to learn and understand material.

Wonderful instructor. Very nice and helpful. I’m very glad I took this course!

I liked that there was a lot of repetition in this class. Since it is so short the repetition helped me learn the topics better.

Such a great teacher! Really encouraged students to learn.

I thought Dr. Champine is an excellent instructor.

Champine Student Evaluation Comments

Student Evaluation Comments

Spring 2011 – IDEA

Jim Champine

BI 200-01

He is a terrible teacher. I do not like his teaching methods. The way he sets up his test are random. I hated this class. I had a terrible experience taking this class. His jokes are not funny he expects you to know everything already. I only took his class because he was the only one teaching it. His test are to long for a 50 minute class a ten page test. Worst teacher I ever had.

I learned A LOT in this class! Great professor, made it easy to understand by putting it in real-life situations. Always helpful outside of class. The tests are a little too lengthy and a little to detailed. Felt like I knew the main points but did not know (or know to study) an example organism for each process, tricky! Overall great class and teacher, maybe redesign tests to allow students to show they gained overall knowledge of the material and not examples for everything. Very pleased with course and instructor though J

Overall, I enjoyed this class. I would enjoy something in lab other than just taking notes such as a hands on activity or something a bit more exciting. Some parts of the course are kind of boring, but I learned a lot from this course and Dr. Champine.

This was overall a great class and very in depth.

Lot of material on each test. Adding another exam may be beneficial for some people, or quizzes more often to help keep info fresh.

Questions did not feel welcome and sometimes short with students.

The lecture has a very good structure. I like how we did not have to get into groups for projects, that’s too hard to do for science classes. Excellent instructor, keep telling those jokes during class too.

1) I learned more the second half of the course without all the powerpoints. In other words  - teaching old school with over head projector and writing on blackboard.

2) Interesting course not what I expected.

I like that you provided us w/the powerpoint slides and allowed us access to them throughout the semester. I wasn’t a fan of the last test material notes. I attended class everyday and still felt that I would like to have more access to the slides you presented. The length of the 2nd test was too long to be taken in the time period allotted and made if very stressful to complete.

The second test was much longer along with covering more difficult subject matter than the first. Perhaps at least make it shorter or split it in two so one is not caught so off guard.

Tests had too much information covered on them. More tests with less into on each would make studying easier.

It was a really good course. I enjoyed it a lot.

The course material could be very interesting if presented in a differed manner, than just being gone over in a monotone way. The class is overall a little too laid back for a good learning experience. And the amount of work being put forth exceeds the normal amount for a 3 credit hour class.

BI 200-01 lab

The lab is better than the lecture for sure. There is more application of the facts and then an expression and analysis of results. The professor showed interest in the subject matter but not as much in the students.

Fought with Dr.Bluma a lot in front of the class, very unprofessional. Also, says “aah…well?” too much.

The labs that were performed showed several great techniques for studying microorganisms. The subject matter was very interesting and I enjoyed it very much.

Overall, I enjoyed the lab portion of this course. I like the hands on activities and relating the material to real life situations. The lab made the course more exciting and Dr. Champine was very helpful with things I didn’t understand.

BI 245-01

I enjoyed this class. The techniques covered are important to research in the life sciences. I think it would be more beneficial for advisors to encourage taking this class earlier in their college career.

Needs to be more organized and explain things better. He can’t always just say “like I taught you in BI – 200.”

The experiences gained by taking this course are extremely valuable. However, the organization of this course makes it difficult to get information. Often times you spend more time trying to figure out what is going on than doing experiments. I feel a better organized class would greatly improve the course.

A very informational class, I learned a lot of lab techniques, this knowledge will definitely help me in my future career.

Course concepts and laboratory activities were highly disorganized, but informative and relevant to biotechnology. The emphasis on lab notebooks and a single manuscript was a good element while not being overwhelming.

Great class. Great teacher. Wouldn’t want anybody else to teach it.

Sometimes the class seemed to be a little unorganized.

Dr. Champine is a compassionate teacher who is willing to work with his students. The assignments can be difficult, but he always helps students with questions if they have them.

Dr. Champine is a great professor and he’s even my personal favorite professor at SEMO.

BI 154-01 lab

I felt that the pre-labs were too difficult considering most topics were brand new material for the students. Other than that, I feel Champine is an amazing lab instructor and really made it interesting.

I learned a lot from lab, and it helped me understand some of what was going on in lecture. The only possible complaint I could have is in regards to volume – with all the equipment in the lab running, it can sometimes be difficult to hear the instructions given. Overall, however, this is an excellent course and Dr. Champine is obviously very knowledgeable in this area!

Dr. Champion! Super E.coli

It seemed that there was a lot of information to cover and not that much time to cover it. I did learn more than I thought I would.

The uncomfortable chairs are distracting.

Great class. I really enjoyed it and learned more than I thought I would. No suggestions really.

Give him a raise.

Great teacher love the class

Very original and kept students on task. Great professor.
