ORAL PRESENTATION GUIDELINES AND RUBRIC

MASTERY SCORES1

SCORE 18 - 20

 Designates a Clearly Excellent presentation.

  1. Focus: the purpose is very clearly stated; the hypothesis is narrowed sufficiently and appropriately and is clearly stated; the specific audience has clearly been taken into account when delivering the presentation.
  2. Organization: the presentation clearly follows the sequence of sections appropriate for this assignment, section transitions are effective; the conclusion effectively summarizes the presentation, is related to the whole, and ends clearly.
  3. Development: all sections begin with a clear identification; presentation incorporates clear, effective, and well-constructed visual aids where these aid understanding.
  4. Style: language is memorable and grammatically perfect; language usage is felicitous; tone is appropriate
  5. Delivery: eye contact is effectively established with the audience; gestures and paralinguistic cues are used to reinforce particularly important ideas; no excessive use of vocalized pauses (e.g., “ah, um”); presenter(s) is/are extremely articulate
  6. References: information from outside source is incorporated logically, insightfully, and elegantly into the presentation.

SCORE 16 - 17

Designates a Still Impressive presentation..

  1. Focus: the purpose is clearly stated; the hypothesis is narrowed and is clearly stated; the specific audience has clearly been considered when delivering the speech
  2. Organization: the presentation clearly follows the sequence of sections appropriate for this assignment, section transitions are evident the conclusion effectively summarizes the presentation and ends clearly.
  3. Development: all sections begin with a statement of identification; presentation includes well-thought out visual aids where these aid understanding.
  4. Style: most language is memorable and grammatically correct; language usage is accurate; tone is appropriate
  5. Delivery: eye contact is established with the audience; gestures and paralinguistic cues are mostly used to reinforce particularly important ideas; some vocalized pauses are used; student is articulate
  6. References: information from outside sources is used logically and proficiently.

Designates an Adequate presentation.

  4. Style: most language is somewhat memorable and grammar is generally competent; language usage is correct; tone is usually appropriate
  5. Delivery: eye contact with the audience is somewhat established; gestures and paralinguistic cues are sometimes used to reinforce particularly important ideas; several vocalized pauses are used; student is somewhat articulate
  6. References: source material is incorporated logically and adequately; sources are documented accurately for the most part.

NON-MASTERY SCORES

SCORE 9 - 11

 Designates a Developing presentation

  1. Focus: the purpose is unclear; the hypothesis is only partially stated; the specific audience has been partially considered when delivering the speech
  2. Organization: the presentation loosely acknowledges the sequence of sections appropriate for this assignment, section transitions are unclear; the conclusion partially summarizes the presentation, is somewhat related to the whole. And stops without clearly ending.
  3. Development: sections are poorly identified; visual aids are poorly developed or absent and do not aid understanding.
  4. Style: language is not very memorable, grammar is occasionally poor; language usage is generally though not always accurate; tone is occasionally inappropriate
  5. Delivery: eye contact with the audience is hardly established; gestures and paralinguistic cues are seldom used to reinforce particularly important ideas; vocalized pauses are used frequently; student is not very articulate
  6. References: source material is incorporated but sometimes inappropriately or unclearly; sources are documented accurately only occasionally

SCORE 6 - 8

Designates a Rudimentary presentation.

  1. Focus: the purpose is unclear; the hypothesis is only partially stated; the specific audience has been partially considered when delivering the speech
  2. Organization: the presentation loosely acknowledges the sequence of sections appropriate for this assignment, section transitions are unclear; the conclusion partially summarizes the presentation, is somewhat related to the whole, and stops without clearly ending.
  3. Development: sections are vaguely identified; visual aids that would aid understanding are poorly developed or absent..

  4. Style: language is not memorable, grammar is generally poor; language usage is inaccurate; tone is inappropriate
  5. Delivery: almost no eye contact with the audience; gestures and paralinguistic cues are seldom used to reinforce particularly important ideas; vocalized pauses are used frequently; student is not very articulate
  6. References: source material is inappropriately or unclearly incorporated; documentation is infrequent

 Designates an Incoherent presentation

  1. Focus: the purpose is unclear; the hypothesis is barely identified; the specific audience has been considered only vaguely when delivering the speech
  2. Organization: the presentation barely acknowledges the sequence of sections appropriate for this assignment, section transitions are absent; the conclusion barely summarizes the presentation, is hardly related to the whole, and just without a clear ending.
  3. Development: sections are barely identified; visual aids that would aid understanding are poorly constructed or absent.
  4. Style: language is not memorable or is confusing, incorrect grammar is generally used; language usage is inaccurate; tone is inappropriate or distracting - gum is chewed during the presentation.
  5. Delivery: no eye contact is made with the audience; gestures and paralinguistic cues are not used to reinforce particularly important ideas; vocalized pauses are used in abundance and distract from the overall message
  6. References: source material is never incorporated or incorporated inappropriately or unclearly; documentation is inaccurate

 SCORE 0

Designates a presentation that has clearly not been developed to address the question,  fails to present the appropriate sections, includes no visual aids, and makes no attempt to answer the given question or relate to the given topic, and just tails off without a clear ending.
