Check out the Paleomap project http://www.scotese.com/earth.htm  This site has maps of where the continents were in various geologic time periods.  In our part of MO, see "early Carboniferous" and locate MO south of the equator, and under water.  This is where our limestone layers come from.  If you click on "Late Carboniferous" you will see that MO is still in the tropics, but now is above water.  This is when Illinois had forests that became coal about 306-290 million years ago.

Animation of the opening of the North Atlantic Ocean, starting 200 million years ago to the present.  http://www.scotese.com/natlanim.htm

Even cooler is the breakup of Pangea - the land masses of all the continents were together about 200 million years ago.  This animation shows the major continents moving. http://www.scotese.com/sfsanim.htm
