Water Quality Issues

Theme:

All life requires water, and the availability of clean, high quality water is declining. The public is generally supportive of water quality issues, but important questions remain. Methods for insuring water quality must include not only scientific data, including chemical, geological, biological, and soil information, but must also consider sociological (especially with regard to agriculture) and policy issues. The major legal basis for water quality issues in the U. S. is the Clean Water Act. An important problem with water quality, particularly locally, is the identification and remediation of non-point sources.

Nonpoint Source Success Stories

This site demonstrates the successful implementation of the Section 319 Clean Water Act Nonpoint Source program. The report provides examples of successful solutions to a variety of water quality problems caused by nonpoint source pollution. (Includes Missouri case regarding non-point source pollution by poultry farms.)

There are many success stories of people who are making a difference in protecting their ground water. Some of them are large coordinated projects, while some are smaller individual efforts.

One of the foci within the Fraser Basin Ecosystem Study (BEST) is the use of water as an integrative environmental indicator of ecosystem function and stress. As BEST concentrates on ecological processes, naturally-defined watersheds have been chosen as the unit for study. Three case studies represent the range of land uses in the Lower Fraser Valley, and thus a range of non-point source pollution types.
